Reservation to Govt. services & education for Muslims and Christians : DMK9/13/2007 12:03:45 PM HK
CHENNAI: The DMK government in Tamil Nadu on Thursday promulgated an ordinance providing for exclusive reservation for Muslims and Christians in government services and in educational institutions.
The reservation would come into effect from September 15, the 99th birth anniversary of DMK founder CN Annadurai, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said in a statement.
He said the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission, headed by Justice Janardanam, which was asked to go into the issue, had recommended that the quantum of reservation could be fixed according to the census arrived at by the Second Backward Classes Welfare Commission. The government had decided to reserve 3.5 per cent reservation each for Muslims and Christians, which would be carved out from the 30 per cent reservation for backward classes in the state, he said.
"The DMK government has always had a soft corner for minorities. Our party promised an exclusive reservation for them. As a gift for minorities on the occassion of the 99th birth anniversary of late CN Annadurai, exclusive reservation is introduced for minorities from September 15."

Originally reservations had been only on the basis of caste and since caste was a phenomenon unique to the Hindu's, all the beneficiaries were Hindus. In due course, 'socio-economic criteria' was also included and in the case of non-Hindus the criteria was applicable to certain sections within the larger non-Hindu community. Now the attempt is to include all the non-Hindus (read Muslims and Christians) within the ambit of reservations while a huge chunk of the Hindus remain outside the ambit. We've moved from caste to socio-economic and have now come to religious reservation. We are on dangerous grounds.
