Archbishop snubs Karnataka CM-- the full story September 24, 2008.
The English language media reported only what happened at the carefuly rehersed performance of Archbishop Bernard Moras's outburstwhen the Karnataka CM Yediyurappa visited him.
Kannada papers have given a more complete account and Moras's stunt seems to have backfired.Here is the account from an insider who was actually present. First,the idea that the CM should visit the Archbishop came from a member of the Archbishop's camp who is also close to the Congress party. NDTV had also been invited and the opening greeting was in English though bothspeak Kannada. (Yediyurappa does not like to speak English.) But the performance was for national consumption, so the English.The Archbishop ave the rehearsed performance, which was broadcast onTV.
The CM controlled his normally quick temper so as not to make a public scene and lose his dignity. But once inside, away from lights and cameras, Yedurappa gave theArchbishop a piece of his mind. First he said a person in his(Archbishop' s) position should set an example to youth with his behavior, but he had failed in this task by his undignified public out burst. His conduct was unbecoming of a man claiming to be a'dharmaguru' .Then Yediyurappa told him that the state was having enough troublefighting terrorism and the church violence due to the activities of unruly missionaries was adding to the police burden. He told Moras that he could help the government do its job by controling the missionariesand put a stop to their activities.
At that point, one of Archbishop's men started whispering something in Moras's ear. It was now Yediyurappa' s turn to lose his temper. He told everyone present that a man of god had no need for secrecy, only politicians need secrecy. So there was no need for anyone to whisper anything to the Archbishop. They could say the same thing openly. The message was clear- the Church was playing politics in the name of religion. That was the end of the meeting. It is clear that Congress and JD (S) were behind the whole thing and Archbishop Moras was a useful idiot. I saw the story in the Kannada daily Samyukta Karnataka and got more details from a person who was present at the meeting.

The clergy has lost touch with the laymen that are now literate and have independent sources of information. That Yeddurappa did not react before the cameras [he might have been taken aback by the Bishop's whine] does credit to him.Would netizens have a look at the anti-India propaganda in the Wukipedia by Mallu priests and nuns hiding under various pseudonyms? archbishopJust like the dramatic headlines of today hindu newspaper written by a parvati menon. the huge headlines on the front page screaming that a nun had been gang raped, making it sound like it had happened just now when it was a commentary on an incident that was supposed to have taken place soon after the murder of the 84-year old Sadhu and 5 of his followers. the language used by this parvati was terrible and enough to provoke even the most passive person. so this whole christian thing seems to be an attempt to oust the BJP governments.

Media getting charged up....This is good news. It's relieving to know that Shri.Yediurappa gave a befitting reply to them. All the media is getting geared up for BJP bashing. The big fight(ndtv) and Devil's advocate(cnn-ibn) on last Saturday were all well scripted dramas. I guess more "shows" like this will come.

Poaching of sheep
Isn't the Archbishop a leader of the Roman Catholics? His supreme leader, the Pope, has talked of 'poaching of Catholic sheep' by other Christian denominations. If the Pope is so disturbed by just a switch of denominations within Christiandom, can't the good Archbishop understand that Hindus are no longer willing to tolerate the ambushing of poor Hindu tribals and other weaker sections by Pentacostals and converting them?

KOCHI : We condemn the violence in the name of religion. No religion accepts violence. This meeting resolves that mutual trust, friendship and collective efforts among different religions is inevitable not only for the unity and integrity of the nation but also for the Very survival of humanity. Attempts and postures to create hatred and distrust among religions are to be dissuaded and defeated. Faith in one's own religion is precious to everyone. Any attempt to convert religion by force will upset religious harmony. The right and freedom of the individual to practice his religion should never be denied. Similarly the Indian Constitution and Indian tradition upholds the right and freedom of people of all religions to preserve and practice their respective faith. The tendency to question and condemn other religions has to be stopped. Also it is wrong to project in bad taste insult icons and idols of religious significance held in great regard by the faithful.
Lately, there have been frequent developments that cause concern to the religious people. More than four churches in Kerala were attacked. Attack and loot in temples is quite common. The main gate at the entrance of the famous Angadipuuram temple was set ablaze. Several Sree Narayana Guru Mandirs were demolished. The failure of the authorities to bring to book the guilty or to pursue the investigation effectively has led to strong protest among the people. Places of worship are solemn and sacred to whomever they belong. Cooperation to promote and strengthen faith in the Almighty is always to be hailed.
We are committed to the unity and integrity of India. We shall unite to work strive for the cause of the poor and the persecuted in this country. Also we shall join hands for the moral upliftment of the society. All have to be conscious and cautious about the political moves to exploit religious sentiments. We shall always try to ensure peace and harmony in the society.

Positive elementThere is one positive element in the whole process. That is the fact that the church has finally accepted that the the primary reason behind all the inter-religious problems is the conversion attempt by the missionaries. There was considerable reporting by Mathrubhoomi. National media is a bunch of anti-Hindu pseudo-intellectuals who pose as thinkers and philosophers. Just ignore them and proceed with our own agenda. Modi is a strong man; Yedyurappa is a strong man. Let them do their duty. We shall support them,Archbishops notwithstanding. If BJP comes to power they should seriously think about the issue of the management of church properties by Vatican in India. Vatican is a political state also. Indian constitution prohibits a foreigner from owning landed property in India. But the entire property of the church in India is owned by Vatican, a foreign entity. How can this be ratified? Study the issue carefully and take appropriate action. Appeasement cannot go to any level of absurdity. At least BJP should reverse this gross violation of the constitution.

Peace of the graveyard?Dialogues can lead to peace. But peace alone is not what it should all be about. Sometimes we talk of the peace of the graveyard, don't we? Dialogues should lead to truth. Believing my religion alone is true and all others are false is neither the truth nor is it conducive to true peace. Till Christianity and Islam do not accept other religions as equally valid, they will always be the cause of religious strife.

Jammu bounces back to normalcy after Amarnath agreement

JAMMU: People thronged barbers' shops, children rushed to school and heavy traffic clogged the roads here Monday as the Jammu region bounced back to normalcy after a two-month-long spell of curfews and shutdowns over the Amarnath land row.
The longest queues were outside beauty saloons or the roadside barbers, where people waited for their turn to get a haircut. "I have been waiting for two months to get a haircut," said Rohit Raina, a private sector employee.
Rohit stood in line for over 90 minutes as his barber in Gole Market area of Gandhi Nagar struggled to handle the surge of customers. "I opened my shop at 6 am. There is an unusual rush," said barber Lakshmi Das.
Children could be seen rushing to school, excited at the prospect of meeting their friends after a long break. "We had almost forgotten about school," said Neha Gupta, a Class 6 student at the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Gandhi Nagar.
People on the roads greeted each other with slogans of "Bamb Bamb Bhole", hailing Hindu god Shiva. "Bamb Bamb Bhole" had been chanted by members of the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS), which spearheaded the protests against the cancellation of land allotment to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).
The state government had May 26 transferred a 40-hectare plot of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board but withdrew this following protests in the Muslim-dominated Kashmir valley. The revocation July 1 ignited an agitation in the Hindu majority Jammu region that lasted 61 days.
The land was restored to the shrine board Sunday morning by the government for use "exclusively" during the pilgrimage period. Residents of the walled city here continued to congratulate each other Monday for what they believed was a "victory of the people of Jammu over the forces of injustice".

Amarnath agitation a grand success.Dear Mr. Menon, The agitation started because the 100 acres land that was given to the Amarnath Shrine Board to use for the benefit of the pilgrim was taken back. The agitation is a success because the government has been forced to give back to the Shrine Board the 100 acres land for use of the pilgrims. With the words 'exclusive usage' in the agreement and the fact that the government is unlikely to give any other party permission to use the land, it is as good as the Shrine Board has got the 100 acres all for itself for the period of the pilgrimage - however long it extends. Nowhere in the agreement is it said that the period is only 3 months, as reported in the media. If the Board wants to extend the pilgrimage over a longer period, then the exclusive use for that period is automatically granted. Can you please spell out why you think it is a compromise?

A perfect ending to a historic struggle

If you believe in yourself dreams do come true. One can't think of any other expression that can aptly sum up the mood of the people in the Jammu region today. Their demand has finally been met. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) will be allotted land for raising temporary facilities for the duration of the annual pilgrimage in the south of the Kashmir region. It has taken the people more than two months of constant protests and 40 days of bandh to make them heard in the corridors of power.
Indeed, their movement has been historic. Never before has such solidarity been seen on this side of the Pir Panjal. Tens of thousands of people have staged demonstrations in every nook and corner. What is equally significant is that they have been tireless in their pursuit. Every day they have been on the streets regardless of whether or not there is curfew. They have walked long distances. Women have played an important part. So have children. They have faced the rough end of the police stick. They have been made to stand face to face with the Army, of all forces, and encounter its bullets. It is not easy for the people to survive when they shut down all their activities in quest of a single goal. Every person actually tends to suffer. There is no milk, no bread, no salt and no sugar for days together. Travel to and from hospitals and the city's main railway station is adversely hit. Ceremonies in connection with marriages and deaths are deprived of their usual adjuncts.
This province has seen all this and even more. Yet, nobody has made an exhibition of his or her distress. They have not rushed to television channels to shed tears. Instead, they have taken their pain in stride. Not only that. Ten of them have sacrificed their lives for a cause. Of them two have taken their own lives bewitched by a common ambition. Although their acts have been of exceptional courage the suicides in any form should not take place in any age. Still these instances have occurred. How does one explain them? On the whole it is remarkable that the people have shown tremendous patience. They have been made to live with several innuendos like "vandals", "criminals", "communal" and "partisan". To their credit they have ignored them. They have known all along that they are on the right course and have been vindicated in the end.
Why has Jammu erupted like it has done never before? There is only one logical explanation. Instead of getting a sympathetic hearing it had salt rubbed into its wounds by "political leaders" including those who ought to have taken a state-wide perspective. Tragically even New Delhi initially showed an extremely poor understanding of the ground reality. The poser was simple. Why could the people of one part of the State not have amenities to exercise their right to worship in the other part under a dispensation devised by the legislature? The separatists replied by saying that the pilgrimage had been going on for decades and the local Muslims had been facilitators. This was beating about the bush because that was not something in dispute.
The stupendous success of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has changed the entire perception about how to manage shrines in the State. The number of pilgrims has skyrocketed. Why should they have to wait for hours together in long queues in their cars especially on the Baltal side? Why could not they have a place to relax for some time? Why should not their offerings be utilised for their welfare and for serving humanity as a whole? There was no answer to these questions. Instead, a controversy was raised even though there was no scope for it with the State Legislature and the High Court having already settled the matter. It is being trumpeted up that a record number of devotees have turned up this year. What is being ignored is that an overwhelming number of them had paid obeisance at the cave shrine before the eruption of the secessionist violence in the Valley. Amazingly it was suggested by a section that the task should be left to the State Government. Why could the job not be executed by the SASB headed by no less a person than the Governor?
The grim truth is that separatists whipped up misplaced notions of a "Hindu invasion" of a "Muslim" region and articulated it in terms of the emergence of "Israeli-type settlements." They gained strength because the People's Democratic Party (PDP) exposed itself to the charge of behaving like an accomplice and the National Conference caved in momentarily. The activities across the Pir Panjal fuelled Jammu's apprehensions that that it was being denied its due once again. As a consequence this province's deep wounds of discrimination against it by the Kashmir-based leaders who claimed themselves to the "State" leaders were reopened. It was further infuriated by open display of the Pakistani flags and chanting of pro-Pakistan slogans. The reaction to this was that everyone in this region took national tricolour in his hands and waved it with pride. The actions and utterances of "Kashmiri" leaders are on record. The response to them is now part of the moving local folklore.
The result is that the issues that the Jammu agitation has brought before the nation are clear. What should be the future of Jammu and Kashmir with the "State" leaders refusing to look beyond their narrow constituencies? How long can New Delhi be soft towards the anti-national elements? Why should the minorities in the country's only Muslim-majority State be asked to play a second fiddle even in a matter like worship in a country that has chosen secularism as its creed? Why should there be blatant regional discrimination in the State just because a section threatens secession? Why should the separatists and their patrons not be treated in the fashion the United States had done centuries ago during its evolution as a democracy and as Pakistan, ironically though, is doing presently in its tribal areas? The success of the Jammu agitation is that it has brought these queries to the fore.
The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) has done a commendable job. It has carried great credibility among the masses because its leaders have been sincere and have resisted attempts to toe the ideology of one party or the other. That it has stuck to its one-point plank is praiseworthy. If the other issues have surfaced one has to thank those in the Valley who preached "freedom for Islam" equating it with "freedom for Pakistan." Looking ahead we can only hope that the turmoil on either side of the Jawahar Tunnel throws up a leader who is truly secular and believes in the State as one entity integrated with the rest of the country.

"I am happy that the Orissa government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incidents," he added.

Hail the Hindus of JammuAny amount of praise for the Hindus of Jammu would not be enough. They have carried forward the agitation taking all communities with them. Theirs was not merely arm-chair philosophizing. They took to the streets, shut down their day-to-day livelihood for 61 days and sacrificed - all for the honour of Hindus the world over. The secular press is forced to see the victory but they are not highlighting it as a victory of the Hindus. It is this very shyness in giving the Hindus its due that has led to the growth of anti-national forces and their political patrons. The anti-national forces must be crushed and they are not only in Kashmir. Only the power of Hindus arisen and united can do this. Thank you, Hindu brothers of Jammu, for showing the rest of Hindus the way.

Pakistanis have no rights in India. After the declaration of the Separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani who is supported by the Hurriyat faction that there is no solution in Srinagar but merger with Pakistan, it is time for India to act.
All these years in the name of minority appeasement, successive governments have ignored these separatist calls and kept giving the Muslims of Srinagar more and more liberty to attack our forces and speak against our country. Countless jawans have given their life over Kashmir.
If the separatists think that there is no solution to the crisis in Kashmir other than merging with Pakistan, they ares free to leave Kashmir and migrate to Pakistan. If he thinks it is Islam that binds him to Pakistan, why has he and his ancestors stuck to Kashmir when it was being partitioned in the name of Islam? Why didn’t he migrate to his heavenly country? Why did Pakistan occupy parts of Kashmir?
Yassin Malik went a step further and called for the complete independence of Kashmir from both India and Pakistan. With so much hatred for the country being openly displayed in the streets of Kashmir, where is the government of India in all this?

Destroy Pakistan or it will destroy us.Let us fulfill the Kashmiri separatists' dream - let us open the Muzzaffarabad road - one way. They can get out of India and into Pakistan. In fact, we have to push them further into Pakistan proper and retake Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. The government should prepare a contingency plan to destroy Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. (In all probability, Pakistan may have already prepared a contingency plan to destroy our nuclear reactors and may have infiltrated sleeper cells into India for aiding the purpose.)
Let us not live in a dream world. The reality is that either we destroy Pakistan or it destroys us.

Agitation to continue until land is returned: SASS

Talking tough, Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS) on Sunday said that it will continue with its agitation until a piece of land at Baltal is returned to the shrine board.
Alleging that the Centre was adopting a biased stand on Jammu and Kashmir by following a policy of appeasement towards the valley, SASS convenor Leela Karan Sharma said, "The Central Government has been a mute spectator. It is following a wrong policy of division."
Sharma threatened to march to Baltal, where the piece of land is located, if the SASS' demand of reverting it to the shrine board was not met.
"We have many options to continue our protests. But we would better not disclose them," he told reporters in New Delhi.
When asked whether economic blockade was one of the options, Sharma said, "It could be. But right now there is no blockade. If we really do, the whole world will come to know."
Blaming Centre's "wrong policies" for the present crisis in the State, he said that if the Government wanted to save the country from terrorism, it has to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu.
"Kashmir is the gateway of terrorism to India. If you want to save the country, you have to strengthen Jammu. We appeal to the people of India to stand behind the people of Jammu," Sharma said.
The Samiti objected to the handing over of the management of the Amarnath Yatra to the State Tourism Department saying that it has no locus standi to handle Hindu religious affairs.
Sharma criticised leaders of PDP, National Conference, Governor NN Vohra and Central Government for "bowing down" before the separatists on the Amarnath issue.
"Change Vohra as the Governor and it will help in building a congenial atmosphere in Jammu," he said.
Asked about the demand for opening of trade through the Muzaffarabad road, he said, "it was nothing but a blackmailing tactic of some of the Kashmiri leaders."
Sharma said that they were ready for talks to find an amicable solution to the present crisis.
"We are not against dialogue," he said by adding, "What we want is the piece of land at Baltal and there should be no interference in the affairs of Shrine Board," he said.
Asked whether there was any possibility of taking a "middle path" to resolve the issue, Sharma said, "If there is any, it should come from the Government. We are open for it."
He said that the SASS agitation was totally secular and people from all sects were participating it.

Land or BlockadeThe agitation for Amarnath has meant complete shut down in Kashmir for many weeks now. This must be a world record. However, our pleas are likely to fall only on deaf ears because the UPA government is unable to think of anything beyond appeasing Muslims. The only solution is indeed an economic blockade of Kashmir. “Land or Blockade - this should be our war cry. And anytime in future the Amarnath yatra is threatened, there should be an immediate response of economic blockade. The Muzaffarabad road should be opened - but only one way, for those wishing to leave India for Pakistan. Till we get the land, allow only the Army to use the road to Kashmir. The only people who are opposing allotment of 100 acres of land to Amarnath are the separatists of Kashmir. This is proved by the fact that the Congress-PDP government agreed to give the land to the shrine. They developed cold feet when the separatists opposed it. Therefore the separatists must be crushed – otherwise only their writ will run in Kashmir. The UPA lacks the political will to do it. BJP must put the slogan “Crush the Separatists” into their election manifesto.
